Relay Race Ideas

These relay race ideas are ideal for an Easter celebration or a child's birthday party. Not only for indoor and outdoor games to play together, you can also do it with friends online!

  1. Egg Races

Material needed: spoons (one for each participant), eggs (real or plastic, one per team).

You'll need two teams for this one. Prepare a spoon and a hardboiled or plastic egg. Each group needs to place their egg on a spoon from the start to the turning point until finally returning without dropping the egg. The egg is then passed to a teammate for their turn. If the egg falls, the player must come to a halt and rescue it. The team that finishes the relay first wins.

Alternatives Hints: It would make a mess if you use raw egg, but if you don't mind the hassle you can have a little bit of fun together too. They are not allowed to get their egg cracked or broken! Don't forget to prepare some egg replacements for one or two.

If you wish to utilize the plastic type, spice the game up by using a spoon to do the relay race. No messy, no waste.

You don't have any eggs? Instead, use coins (one per person, but you may want a few spares). In this version, you may place a little coin on the spoon and have the youngsters sprint while trying to keep it from falling.

Whether you utilize eggs or cash, consider raising the difficulty by including obstacles or requiring players to skip instead of walk.

  1. Drop the penny

Material Needed: Empty egg cartons, bowls, and at least one cent per participant are required (a few spares are a good idea in case they get lost).

To set up this relay, first draw two lines: a beginning line and a turn-around line. Form groups of your players. One egg carton (lid removed) should be placed about midway between the two lines, one for each team.

Arrange a dish for each player with some pennies at the turn-around line.

The game begins with the first player from each team sprinting to the bowl and picking up one cent. Next, they dash to their team's egg carton and they need to drop the penny right into the cups from their waist height. When one tries not having it, give a second chance first! After they lose it, they need to move the turn to another teammate.

The game is done when a team got their whole penny filled first!

Alternatives Hints: Change pennies for beans or other party-themed souvenirs. Combine the two games by having players bring their pennies or other objects to the carton on the utensil from the egg-spoon relay.
