As a character, Hello Kitty is so vague and expressionless that any number of attributes might be put into her: cuteness, coolness, sexuality, weirdness. Everyone believes she's a blank slate onto which they may put their own meanings. The idea that she isn't a blank slate — and consequently that everyone's interpretations are incorrect — hurts a little.
