What Does Artistic Religious Symbolism Mean?

Religious symbolism and iconography are fundamental and frequently complicated artistic forms and movements that serve as some sort of key to communicating religious thoughts as well as the visual, aural, and kinetic portrayals of religious ideas and occurrences.

The Characteristics of Religious Symbolism

What is the Purpose of Christian Symbolism in Art?

Symbolism abounds in Christian art history. Christians have created works of art for centuries that explain scripture and tradition via the use of symbolic libraries of gestures, objects, colors, plants, animals, and even the human body.

Christian Art's Use of Color and Its Connotations

Following are some colors associated with Christian art and their respective meanings.

White. White represents sanctity, innocence, and the purity of the soul. Purity and virginity are represented by the color white. In depictions of the immaculate conception, the Virgin Mary wears white, while in other paintings, she is bare-chested beneath her blue robes.

Black. Black has long been associated with death and grief; it is frequently used to denote the devil, the underworld, witches, and mourning, with the exception of when it is combined with a color such as white, which represents purity, in which case it serves as a symbol of humility.

Brown and Gray. Brown and gray are colors associated with modesty and earthiness; gray is also a hue of sadness.

Red also represents Pentecost and the flaming energy of the Holy Spirit. It is the symbol of life's blood and is used by the virgin.

Purple. The regal color of purple is a representation of strength and frequently denotes God. In other contexts, it represents grief and remorse for your past conduct. In the weeks preceding Easter, it is frequently used to symbolize sadness for Christ's cross.
