What is the Importance of Math in the Real World?

It is not an exaggeration to say that the world revolves around math. As one of the oldest areas of knowledge to be known by mankind, math has its claws on almost everything around us.

Math is an essential tool in various aspects of human life, such as natural science, engineering, medicine, and even social science. In a simple way, we could say that math is the study of numbers and their connection to the real world. Hence, it is important for young children to build their base knowledge of numeration as early as possible.

How to Connect Spring and Math in A Lesson?

Spring and math seem like something different at first glance, and it is because they are. One is a season, and the other is numerical knowledge. However, with the right learning method and medium, these vastly different subjects could be a perfect creative learning aid for the young learners.

Blending spring and math could be the bridge for the students to connect and improve their understanding of two subjects at once. Here are some ways that teachers or parents could connect spring and math lessons:

  • Use a spring-themed worksheet where the students could feel the spring vibe through a colorful math practice sheet. Some examples for spring math practice are the four basic arithmetic operations(addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), skip counting, pattern recognition, and shape introduction.
  • Incorporated spring-based knowledge in a word-problem math worksheet to help students connect with both subjects.
  • Take the kids outside and ask them to collect leaves or flowers. From the collected plants, the children could make a simple and pretty table of graphs and sort.
  • Show the students the beauty of various types of spring plants, and help them recognize the many types of shapes they could find in nature.

Why is Learning Math Important for Students?

Learning math is essential as it brings various perks. It is one of the fundamental knowledge of a lot of things around us. For example, without math, some things such as calendars, time systems, transportation, architecture, and even food recipes would not exist. Math is the bridge for humans to connect a ‘certainty’ on some levels. Hence, it is understandable why numeral recognition and study are taught to kids as young as possible.

Here are some reasons why learning math is important for students:

  1. Improving Critical Thinking: Practicing math exercises regularly is proven to boost the quality of our brain function. Solving math would help force our brains to find solutions for every problem, hence our critical thinking and problem-solving skills would be improved as well.
  2. Supporting Logical Reasoning: While doing math practice, students do not hone their numerical knowledge. Every math problem they encounter requires a specific way of thinking, which will sharpen their logical and analytical thinking.
  3. Boosting Creativity: Many researchers have proven that math can improve students' creative skills. How is it? It is because, often a math problem requires more than one way of solving, meaning that the student should be able to see something from various perspectives.
  4. Building Foundation for Future: Learning and honing the math skills as young as possible would help the students to build a firmer base for their future. Whether in study or career, having solid math skills would help students to open more doors of opportunity.
  5. Creating a Sense of Empathy: Although it might sound too stretched, some research showed that learning math could help someone in fostering their empathy. This could happen because math could explain many things around us. It is the hidden way for some people to understand how the world works. So, yes! Learning math could help students to be more empathic.

How to Make Math Learning Exciting and Engaging?

It is not a secret that some students are having difficulty in understanding math easily. It is a global problem for many math teachers. However, through a proper and well-made learning strategy, teachers could help the students in understanding math in an exciting way.
